Report on the activities carried out by GOODWILL (NEWERA) in the Tsunami affected areas of Viluppuram, Cuddalore districts and Pondicherry union Territory


Introduction


GOODWILL has started its monitoring activities through its programme unit NEWERA (Network for Education and Rural Action) on 27th December 2004 on wards. The Network partner organizations from the TSUNAMI affected areas of Viluppuram District, Cuddalore District and Pondicherry Union Territory are WEAL, RSEEDS, CAWD, WASH, SHARP, SEIS, HNC TRUST and GOODWILL were effectively involved in the process of survey, Monitoring, Relief and Rehabilitation.

Survey

As the Basic and preliminary task GOODWILL conducted the survey through the partners in the three coastal regions mentioned above. General survey has been conducted initially and with the focus on Dalit the second survey was conducted the survey concluded that the Dalits were affected severely and last their lively hood in 47 Village in the 3 regions.

Monitoring

Besides on the Survey GOODWILL have been conducted the Monitoring activities in Relief camps and also in the affected areas during the relief distribution by the Govt. and other NGOS. In many of the places the Dalits and tribal Victims were ill treated very badly and also they were not availed with relief Based on the Situation, our team members, were approached the Govt. officials (Project officer and Relief Committee) and also the Agencies like CASA (Church Auxiliary for Social Action) and the relief made available with Dalit victims of the following villages
     1. Chinnur Kanni Kovil.
     2. Indira Nagar tribal colony
     3. Kodimarathutheru
     4. Atrangaraiveethi
     5. MGR Nagar
     6. Thandavaraya Sozhagan Pettai
     7. Panangattu Colony
     8. Singarathopu
     9. Murugan Kovil Theru
    10. Idithangi amman Kovil Street

Followed by the Survey and the Monitoring activities, GOODWILL also done the relief activities in three phases

Relief I Phase

In the first phase of relief activity Non-food material Kit including utensils, Vessels and clothes were distributed to 350 families from parangipettai Madha Kovil Street, Atrangarai Veethi, Chinnur Kanni Kovil and Indira Nagar tribal colony of Cuddalore district on13 th January 2005

Relief II Phase

In the Second phase of Relief activity 200 families were distributed with non food material relief kit form at Parangipettai Kodimarathutheru and Murugan Kovil Street of Devanampattinam in Cuddalore District on 25 th January 2005

Relief III Phase

In the III phase the food materials includes 20Kgs of Rice 1Kg of dhal, 1Kg of Oil, 1Kg Sugar, 1Kg tamarind, 1Kg Chilly Powder and 1Kg of Salt were distributed to each family. 600 families were distributed with the food material kit from the following villages.

     1. Devanampattinam - Murugan Kovil Street
     2. Devanampattinam - Idithangi Amman Kovil Street
     3. Malumiarpet
     4. Chippai Veethi
     5. Chinnapachanguppam
     6. PeriyarNagar.

The first and Second phase of the relief was done with the Financial assistance from NESA-DSST through SOCIAL AWARENESS SOCIETY FOR YOUTH, Tindivanam.

The third phase of Relief was done with the Financial assistance received from CCFD-France through Village Development Society (Human Rights Forum for Dalit liberation) Mayiladuthurai.

Water & Sanitation

In the process of TSUNAMI Activities GOODWILL have been conducted the Survey to assess the status of the water and sanitation in TSUNAMI affected areas with the guidance and assistance from TNVHA (Tamilnadu Voluntary Health Association).

Two Village from Viluppuram District namely BommayarPalayam and Keezh Puthupattu were selected randomly by TNVHA and the survey, Sampling and testing were conducted by GOODWILL for the process.

GOODWILL and Network team partners decided to continue the rehabilitation in the process with the process of participatory planning and participatory implementation tools.
